When Hope Returns: Lessons from a Lost Cat and an Ancient Practice
Sometimes the Divine has a funny way of reminding us that what seems lost forever can find its way back to us—often when we need the reminder most.
Just last night, in the quiet darkness of 3 AM, I heard something that stopped my heart: a familiar meow piercing through the silence. For a moment, I thought I was dreaming. But when I checked our security cameras this morning, there he was—our beloved cat Ash, prancing across our patio like he’d never been gone.
Let me back up and tell you why this moment feels like more than just a happy reunion.
The Disappearance That Broke Our Hearts
When we moved our residence about a month ago. Ash vanished. One moment he was exploring his new surroundings, and the next—gone. We searched everywhere. Walked the neighborhood calling his name until our voices were hoarse. Days turned into weeks, and I thought he for sure wasn’t coming back.
We thought he was a goner.
The rational part of my mind kept telling me to accept reality. Cats disappear. Sometimes they don’t come back. Sometimes you have to let go and move on.
But there was another part of me—the part that has spent decades studying ancient wisdom—that whispered: Don’t give up hope entirely. Energy has a way of finding its path back to where it belongs.
The Ancient Wisdom of Persistence
You see, this experience with Ash has reminded me of something profound I explore in my newly released audiobook, “Chris Shelton’s Easy Guide to Emotional Well-Being with Qigong” (Third Edition), now available where audio books are sold.
In Qigong, we learn that Qi—life force energy—never truly disappears. It may seem scattered, blocked, or lost, but it’s always seeking to return to balance, to find its way back to harmony.
Just like Ash.
The ancient Chinese understood something we often forget in our modern rush to “move on” and “let go”: some things are worth holding space for, even when logic tells us they’re gone forever.
The Power of Holding Space
During these weeks without Ash, I found myself practicing the very principles I teach in the book. When grief and loss threaten to scatter our emotional energy, Qigong offers us tools to:
- Cultivate patienceinstead of desperate grasping
- Maintain hopewithout attachment to outcomes
- Stay centeredwhen uncertainty tries to pull us off balance
- Trust the natural flowof life’s rhythms
These aren’t just philosophical concepts. They’re practical skills that sustained me through weeks of not knowing whether our furry family member was alive or dead.
Every morning, I’d practice the meditations and exercises from the book. Every evening, I’d work with the energy techniques that help transform scattered emotions into centered presence.
And somehow, in that space of centered hoping without desperate attachment, I kept a small light burning for Ash’s return.
The 3 AM Miracle
When I heard that meow last night, my first thought wasn’t “I can’t believe it!” It was “Of course.”
Because here’s what Qigong has taught me: when we stop frantically chasing what we’ve lost and instead create a stable, centered space for its return, we align ourselves with the natural intelligence of the Divine.
Ash didn’t come back because I worried about him every day. He came back because somewhere in the depths of my practice, I learned to hold space for his return while simultaneously releasing my desperate need for it.
This is the paradox that ancient wisdom teaches us: we must care deeply while holding lightly.
Your Own Lost Treasures
Ash taught me a valuable lesson on the nature of loss, hope, and unexpected returns.
What have you given up on too quickly? What dreams, relationships, or parts of yourself have you declared “lost forever”?
The practices in my Qigong book aren’t just about emotional well-being—they’re about learning to work with life’s natural rhythms instead of against them. They’re about discovering that sometimes what we think is gone forever is simply taking the long way home.
The Space Between Letting Go and Giving Up
There’s a crucial difference between letting go and giving up. Letting go means releasing our desperate grip while keeping our heart open. Giving up means closing the door entirely.
Qigong teaches us to master this delicate balance—to remain centered and hopeful without becoming attached to specific outcomes or timelines.
Seeing Ash again reminded me that nature operates on her own schedule. Our job isn’t to control the timing—it’s to cultivate the inner stability and openness that allows us to recognize our blessings when they finally arrive.
Sometimes hope returns on four paws at 3 AM.
Sometimes it returns in the form of ancient practices that heal our hearts.
And sometimes, if we’re very lucky, it returns as both.
