The Five Elements relate to each other in three cycles: the creative cycle, the controlling cycle, and the destructive cycle, as depicted in figures below. Understanding these natural patterns of metamorphosis can help explain how organ systems affect one another, and how to treat one system through a related system. They also help us understand how problems with one organ system can affect others. Meridian theory, together with Five Element theory, are how the Chinese describe and explain the interactions of the human body as a dynamic, holistic system.
